We help dogs that are displaying unwanted behaviours through a program of repair and relationship building.
At Pause4Paws we work on helping owners and their dogs form a deeper bond. We look at the underlying problems causing behaviours , with the aim of repairing this at a deep level rather than using traditional methods to address the unwanted behaviour. This can help create a balanced and resilient dog that can cope with situations it faces in our society rather than correcting a specific behaviour only for another one to start when they are scared or feel unsafe. We create that safety and trust between the owner and dog so that if in doubt they will look for our help and guidance rather than trying to cope alone .
Behaviours such as constant barking, pulling on the lead, showing aggression, recall issues, separation anxiety, nervous behaviour, destructive behaviour and obsessive licking are all ways our dogs show they need our help and understanding.
I am a trainee in the Hemene approach to dog development, with the full support, specialism and expert mentorship from Shaun and Kim Ellis with an international network of diverse and experienced instructors behind me, I can help you and your dog to build a long-lasting relationship and overcome the disruptions causing the behaviours above.
Hemene is a word used by the Nez Perce tribe which translates into 1. wolf and 2. we are one, we are the same. The Hemene approach takes the gentle family-oriented teachings of the wolf and helps to repair gaps in your dog’s development. The method is rooted in relationships and is a developmental approach to working with dogs using the natural side of the animal. It is about equality and valuing all members of our family. The Hemene method was created by Shaun and Kim Ellis, at The Wolf and Dog Development Cente in Cornwall, through years of living with wild wolves, captive wolves and dogs.
Dogs and humans are born with unique character traits that influence their behaviour. By understanding and working with this we can help them to feel understood and safe. We can repair the development gaps and create a plan to establish trust, stress management and safety whilst being connected with their human caregivers.
There are many components that influence behaviour, character is one but age and developmental stage of a dog can also have an impact. Trauma can happen right back to being with mum; how the pups were treated and how mum saw the world can have a big impact on our adult dogs.
The repair work we offer is not just a journey for your dog, it can highlight developmental disruptions in ourselves that need work as well. When I started my journey of repair with my dogs, I too spent a lot of time working on me. Our triggers, society shame and interruptions can all impact our dogs. Emotional and social development for your dogs can help them feel safe and secure in their character.
Multi-dog households can have clashes in character traits or dogs doing a job they weren’t born for and therefore not doing it well. If you’re looking for a new dog to fit in with your current canine family, understanding character can be vital to build a harmonious home. If you’re having problems with current family members, we can help too.
What don’t we do?
- We don’t offer quick fixes, this is deep rooted repair work and takes time.
- There is no harsh correction, pinning, prong collars etc.
- We are not sit/stay trainers.
